Introduction

Transit is a very important aspect of Jyotish, used primarily for timing events. Grahas which are stationed in the Rasi chart and are involved in various good and adverse yogas give their results when they move through various signs during their transits. Although it is customary to look at the transit from the Moon, in my view, that is done only out of convenience as Moon sign is readily known from the day of birth and is used in various matters in India even now. The transit is equally important from the Lagna which is unique to people born on the same day, having same Chandra Lagna. A composite analysis of the Transit both from the Lagna and Chandra Lagna gives more accurate results.

In addition to judging the transits from the Chandra Lagna and the Lagna, there is a need to judge the various yogas forming during the transit, the state (Avastha) of the transiting Graha, any obstructions (vedha), Ashtakavarga, the transit of the Dasa and Antardasa Grahas etc. In addition, Nakshatra transits of the Grahas are elaborately dealt in various classics, such as Sarvatobhadra Chakra in Phaladeepika.

The first step however, in understanding of the Transit is to study the results from the Moon. As the understanding matures, an astrologer should expand his horizon and bring in multitude of other factors, to make the judgement more accurate and comprehensive.

Given below the esoteric meaning of Guru’s transit in various Bhavas from the Moon. I am hoping that, after covering the transits of all the Grahas, I will move on to the application of transit principles through Lagna, transit yoga, transit over natal Grahas and Bhavadhipatis, yoga of transiting Grahas with natal grahas and integrating Transits with the Dasa analysis.

Esoteric meaning of the Transits

Guru gives good results transiting through Bhavas of which he is the Karaka i.e., 2nd House, 5th House, 9th House and 11th House. It also gives good result during its transit through the 7th House.

Understanding the esoteric meaning of the transits are important as this can tell the person what’s happening in his life. As long as one understands the direction of the current and flows in that direction, and does not put resistance, the easier it is for him to get over the negative periods and cherish the positive ones.

Guru Gochara in the Janma Rasi:

  1. Jupiter transiting over the Moon cause many changes in life. It is a usually a stressful time.
  2. On the positive side, its the time for soul-searching, introspection and undoing of much of negative karma of the past. During this period, materialism represented by Rahu and the Rajas Grahas Mercury, Venus stay away from the native, as the focus shifts to spiritual activities.
  3. The person goes deep within, into a kind of trance and loses touch with the real world around. The time is akin to the person going to a spiritual master, in a hermitage away from worldly affairs and thus loses connection with real-world.
  4. Guru also puts strict mandate rules and regulations and the native has to follow the path of honesty.
  5. This is a good time for spiritual-activities, studies etc.

Guru Gochara in the 2nd from Janma Rasi:

  1. Jupiter transiting 2H from the Moon is extremely rewarding as the native is out into the world cleansed.
  2. The native gets blessings of the guru and the sustainer, lord Vishnu to have success in various undertaking.
  3. The obstacles ceases and the native gets support in all matters in life.
  4. It is financially rewarding time, and the native attains various luxuries and comfort.
  5. However the native must be careful of not over-indulging, else the punishment can be severe in the forthcoming transit.
  6. It is generally a good time for focusing on righteous usage of wealth for good purpose, investments and also focusing on family matters.
  7. The native will also be supported by family and community, the Kutumba.

Guru Gochara in the 3rd from the Janma Rasi:

  1. Jupiter transiting 3h from Moon is the worst among all transits as the native can’t rest for even a moment. Jupiter in the 3rd house is known as Marana Karaka Avastha.
  2. There are too many changes in life which puts much stress and pressure on the native.
  3. 3H is full of activities, courage, valour etc. which are all signified by Mars. Jupiter is completely opposite of Mars and abhor Mars’s ways of working. This is the reason why Jupiter gets debilitated in the sign where Mars gets exalted (10H of natural zodiac).
  4. The native lack mental stability and peace and runs around like a headless chicken, doing too many things but without any concrete results.
  5. There is a strong sense of dissatisfaction and a feeling that something is missing in life; which native searches frantically.
  6. It is a good time for putting effort for study of books of knowledge which can help calming the mind and giving solace.

Guru Gochara in the 4th from the Janma Rasi

  1. When Jupiter transit the 4h from Moon its a period of gaining stability after a period of upheaval in the 3H.
  2. Its a transition period as good things really start happening in the 5H. One can take it as the stepping stone to the 5th house transit.
  3. In 4H the native has to live away from home and family and undergo some kind of penance.
  4. The native is in a meditative trance and try to seek true meaning behind life, purpose and all the running around.
  5. Its a period of slowing-down. One likes to stay alone in solitude and does not find interests in worldly activities. There is a sense of dejection and disinterest.
  6. The native wanders around with no purpose or trying to find a purpose.
  7. It can be a period of serious soul-searching and a try to find true meaning in life.
  8. It can cause change in place and the native should not resist it.
  9. The best thing to do in such period is to relax, take up yoga, meditation and the like.

Phaladeepika 26.18. During Jupiter’s transit in the Janma Rasi, the person concerned leave his homeland, incur heavy expenditure or loss of wealth, incur enmity with kinsmen. In the 2nd house, gain wealth, family happiness, good results and gain due to speech. In the 3rd house, loss of position, separation from kinsmen, obstacle in undertaking, diseases etc.. In the 4th house, sorrow on account of kinsmen; suffer humiliation, danger from Quadrupeds.

Guru Gochara in the 5th from the Janma Rasi

  1. Jupiter transiting the 5H brings the native to peace, after a period of soul searching.
  2. He is now blessed by the gurus with material happiness and comfort. The native gets what he has been waiting for; after a period of intense suffering!
  3. He gets wisdom, knowledge, power, status, authority and many of his long standing desires are fulfilled.
  4. He is a happy man now. it is a resting period after which the period of intense turmoil will start. The native becomes highly optimistic, rejuvenated with full energy and ready to take on new challenges in life.
  5. He finds meaning and purpose in life and set to invest in his future. The native should now focus on new-beginning and start planning for the future.

Guru Gochara in the 6th from the Janma Rasi

  1. Jupiter transiting the 6H from Moon cause dejection and disinterest.
  2. Even if the person is surrounded by comforts and luxuries in life, he doesn’t find them relishing and finds himself again in a period of lack of purpose!
  3. You have seen so far that Guru doesn’t let you enjoy something for long. It makes you satisfied with whatever you have gained in a good period. Then again it starts contemplating the futility of the material comfort and prod you think that there is something beyond the material existence.
  4. 6H is the house of enemies and the karaka is Saturn. So the native also faces many challenges from enemies and situations which does not work in favour.
  5. Many desires are unfulfilled and that causes depression and dejection during this period.
  6. The best thing to do during this time is to serve people without expecting anything in return; then the challenges will start resolving on its own.

Guru Gochara in the 7th from the Janma Rasi

  1. Jupiter transit through the 7h from Moon is like the light at the end of the tunnel after a gruelling period of dejection and frustration.
  2. 7H stands for desires of our heart and signified by Venus. This marks the period of happiness and fulfilment of long standing desires.
  3. The native gets stability in family life, the social interaction improves and the native comes out of his cocoon (solitude).
  4. There could be good events in family such as marriage, child-birth etc. and the native can make fruitful travels for enhancement of livelihood.
  5. They will get praised by others and there is high likelihood of get better with the social standing.
  6. This is a good time to start socialising with the external world and grow one’s network. That will come to support in the next transit of Guru in the 8th house, where the person is going to undergo another intense period of cleansing.

Guru Gochara in the 8th from the Janma Rasi

  1. 8th House has both positive and negative significations; while on one hand it governs health longevity, hidden wealth, occult and research; on the other it governs debts, obstacles, calamities and birth defects. The Karaka is Saturn who isn’t not good to Jupiter (Jupiter gets debilitated in Saturn’s sign). 8H is also negative for Moon as Moon gets into Chandrastama here and gets debilitated in the 8th house of the naisargika kundali, Scorpio.
  2. Jupiter transiting 8h from Mo is not positive. the native suffers fatigue due to overwork, suffer due to unnecessary travel — another reason of fatigue and tiredness.
  3. If Jupiter is additionally afflicted in transit, then the native suffer many obstacles, calamity, health troubles, loss of near and dear ones, intense and intense suffering.
  4. There could be heavy loss of wealth, fines, penalties, losses in investments and speculation etc.
  5. This is a good time to invest time in the yogic practices, pranayama, regular physical exercises etc.

Phaladeepika 26.19. In the 5th house, child-birth, happiness on account of children, acquaintances with gentlemen, royal favour. In the 6th house, trouble from enemies and cousins, health troubles and diseases. In the 7th house, travel on an auspicious event, happiness from wife, child birth etc. In the 8th house, fatigue due to unfruitful travels, troubles during travels, many inauspicious results and misfortune, loss of money, many kinds of danger and pain.

Guru Gochara in the 9th from the Janma Rasi

  1. 9H is Dharma or the righteous path. The karaka for 9th house is Jupiter himself and the best place for Guru’s transit among all the Bhavas.
  2. The Bhava signifies anything that is respectable and worshipable. it is the temple and the place for prayers.
  3. Jupiter’s transit through this bhava from the Moon gives the person all that he deserved in the entire cycle of 12 years. Things which are stuck for long, get resolved. The person gets divine blessings (promising success, good health, promotion, wealth etc.) more than any other time.
  4. The best thing to do during such time is visiting temples or religious place so that the blessings continue unfettered.

Guru Gochara in the 10th from the Janma Rasi

  1. When Jupiter transits the 10H from the Moon, it becomes a taskmaster. Guru’s standards are incredibly high; it is nearly impossible to match his expectations.
  2. Now what happens when you can’t match the expectations of a strict teacher? Like a strict teacher, Jupiter repeatedly keeps failing you in the exam of life. It is as if, you can’t come out of the never ending cycle of failures.
  3. Here, it can cause fall in position and grace, loss of job or workplace and make one wander for finding recognition and job satisfaction.
  4. The native is forced to take up job or assignment that is much lower than his capability! This makes the person hate one’s boss as they become too tough and demanding. He also hates his circumstances for putting chains on the hands and legs (less power and authority).
  5. Freedom at job is stifled as the native crave for freedom and less interference into the work matters! One keeps saying, “don’t interfere, I know my stuff”. But who is there to listen?
  6. This is a test time. Don’t give up! This is a good time to invest in activities which may not bring short term gain, but are beneficial in long run. One may also look forward to change one’s assignment, team or workplace and be less judgmental about their bosses!
  7. One day the test is going to end and recognition will dawn, when Jupiter moves to 11h. So the call of the hour is to be persevering and remain low key!

Guru Gochara in the 11th from the Janma Rasi

  1. 11H transit of Jupiter is the time to get high! To get, what one has yearned for long time, i.e., recognition and reward for all the hard work.
  2. The person starts relaxing now and get into the mood of enjoying the laurels earned!
  3. Whatever good things one missed or lost in the previous transit, will be regained.
  4. Fatigue will give way to good health, and the increase in income that one waited for long will happen now.
  5. One will get promoted, given new roles and responsibilities for all the skills and talent displayed at work, and the persistence to face tough challenges in life will be rewarded.
  6. This transit is next in benevolence, to 9H transit. One gains name, position, authority, wealth, and all the material happiness and success!

Guru Gochara in the 12th from the Janma Rasi

  1. Like we know, Jupiter doesn’t give good results continuously for long time, as he wants to keep us down to earth and be in touch with the ground realities.
  2. With all the success that one attains during 11H transit, one will say enough is enough! He starts realising futility of material success as something will start troubling him from deep inside
  3. There will be sense a void within and one tries hard to find an answer to the true meaning in life!
  4. It is difficult to satisfy the heart with any material things, as that does not quench the thirst to know more about one-self.
  5. One is inclined to visiting long distance places, pilgrimages, hermitage etc., devote time on philosophy, matters concerning life after death, and prepare one-self for the final journey i.e., life after death!
  6. The suffering can be intense and the intensity of search for true meaning in life will be too overwhelming. Only after Jupiter moves into moon sign, one will start seeing the light end of the tunnel.
  7. The native is disinterested in everything and drift in multiple directions looking for a purpose.
  8. But never lose hope! This is the best time for introspection of whatever you did in past 12 years, attend spiritual lessons, as they will give you much solace and peace in the heart!

Phaladeepika 26.20. In the 9th house, highly auspicious, success in all undertaking, all round auspiciousness. In the 10th house, financial pain, fall from position and grace, pain on account of children and many inauspicious results. In the 11th house, child-birth, gain of position and honor (promotion at work) and many auspicious results. In the 12th house, misery due to material things, fear, anxiety, agitation and such inauspicious results.

Vedha on the Gochara Graha

Vedha

Phaladeepika 26.7. Jupiter’s transit is good in the 2nd, 11th, 9th, 5th and 7th houses, if the houses of Vedha i.e., 12th, 8th, 10th, 4th and 3rd are void of planets.

Vipareeta Vedha

When planets transit their Vedha sthana, then their inauspicious results can be blocked by planets transiting their Vedha pair. For instance for Sun, 3 and 9 are Vedha pair as Sun’s auspicious results in 3rd can be blocked by planets in 9th. Similarly, when Sun transit the 9th, planets (except Saturn) transiting the 3rd can obstruct the inauspicious results. This is called Vipareeta Vedha!

praśna mārga 22.53. Even if planets occupy favourable Gochara positions, they do not contribute good if they are obstructed by Vedha. Similarly, though the Vedha sign may be unfavourable, a planet situated there being counter-obstructed by a planet occupying its Vedhya Rasi does no evil but offers only good.

Understanding of Transit does not end here!

  1. More need to be studied than Guru’s transit in various places from Moon’s natal station.
  2. Especially, Vedha and Vipareeta Vedha need to be studied carefully as a good starting point. Without this, the conclusion could be misleading.
  3. Guru’s Ashtakavarga has a strong say on the matters of Transit. Specific importance is given to Sarvastakavarga (SAV), Guru’s Bhinnastakavarga (BAV) and Prastara Ashtakavarga (PAV).
  4. Guru’s transit through various Graha Kakshyas in the sign will have their impact on the extent of good and bad results.
  5. Guru’s transit through various Bhavas reckoned from the Lagna, through the signs containing Grahas, Yogas etc. need to be studied carefully.
  6. Various yogas happening between Guru and other transiting Grahas as well as natal Grahas need to be studied carefully.
  7. Guru’s transit should be superimposed on various divisional charts, especially Navamsa and Drekkana.
  8. There are various transit related dicta available in Nadi texts such as Deva Keralam etc. which need to be studied as well.
  9. Various classics have given dicta on the position of Guru at the time of death, which need to be studied for computation of the time, when one will leave this mortal plane.
  10. Given below few verses from Phaladeepika, indicating the depth of this subject. More will be covered in subsequent posts.

Phaladeepika 12.25. The birth of a son should he expected during the Dasa or Antara of any one of the 6 planets. viz., (1) the lord of the Lagna, (2) the lord of the 7th, (3) the lord of the 5th, (4) Jupiter, (5) the planet aspecting the 5th house or (6) the one occupying the 5th house or (7) when Jupiter in his orbit transits the sign of the Navamsa Rasi occupied by the lord of the 5th house or the Upagraha Yamaghantaka.

Phaladeepika 12.26. Find when the lord of Lagna comes during his transit (1) in conjunction with the lord of the 5th house, (2) to his exaltation sign, (3) to his own Rasi, (4) to the 5th house and (5) to the sign occupied by the lord of the 5th house. During any one of these transits the birth of a son is possible.

Phaladeepika 13.32. Find out the Rasi and Amsa occupied by the lord of the Bhava under consideration. When Jupiter in his transit comes in trine to this Rasi or Amsa, the realisation of the (good) effect of the Bhava may be expected.

Phaladeepika 17.3. Find the lord of the Drekkana that is rising, Find also the lord of the 8th house as also that of the 22nd Drekkana. When Jupiter transits the Rasi or Amsa occupied by any of these 3 planets, or its triangular position, death may take place.

Phaladeepika 17.6. Subtract the figures of Yamaghantaka from those of the lord of the rising sign. Subtract the figures of the Moon from those of Saturn. Find out the Rasi and its Navamsa indicated by each of these differences. When Jupiter transits the Rasi or Navamsa indicated in either of these results or their Trikona position, the native’s death will take place. Subtract the figures for Mars from those of Rahu. When Jupiter comes to occupy the Navamsa or the Rasi thus indicated by the difference, the death of a brother may happen.
